56th BVI Emancipation Festival
31 JULY – 6 AUGUST 2010
Arguably the biggest event in the British Virgin Islands, the annual celebration marks the 1834 Emancipation Act which abolished slavery in the British West Indies. All the islands celebrate with events taking place across the region. Visitors are in for a treat including live music, dancing, street performers, parties and parades all laced with a distinct Caribbean flavour. The calypso competition is hotly contested with performers competing to win the Calypso King crown. There are also competitions to crown a festival queen, prince and princess. Food and drink are also in abundance – an ideal time to sample Caribbean delights.
