We’re seeing an interesting shift in the amount of time sailors are looking to charter; especially coming through for next year (2013/2014 charter season). The trend we are seeing is for people to charter for 6 – 8 weeks at a time. Perhaps we are seeing this trend in Antigua because it is such a central island in the Caribbean for making the longer passages. With the wind direction from the North-North-East, it’s a perfect point of sailing. We had a charter captain who said to me that “tack is a swear word on their boat”! I love the fact that sailing is such a great sport that it attracts the out and out racers and the laid-back charter guests who really could not be bothered about the speed log.
|Long term chartering brings its own rewards.|
We are certainly seeing more people looking to explore “life aboard” and testing the cruising water (excuse the pun) before they make a life decision to buy a yacht in the Caribbean and cruise for several months each year. We had a couple recently who purchased their first yacht at a Boat Show and were so excited by this that they cancelled a free charter that they had won at a competition. All credit to them and we wish them many happy years of cruising aboard their very own yacht. There are more and more people who sail south from Antigua to explore Guadeloupe, Iles des Saintes and Dominica, and change their crew as they head south. I think this is because it can be liberating with just the two of you, at one with the ocean, leaning to live together on board and work together as a seamless team, but it is also fun to have friends fly in to perhaps share some of the running costs (and a case of beer or two).
|Dominica as part of your long term charter – magical.|
The people who charter bareboat with us long term tend to be the couples who are keen on fishing, cooking and even baking on board. We’ve recently provided a set of baking equipment to a charter guest who liked to bake her own bread, cookies and deserts for the crew ( we can vouch for her fatless pound cake – vegan-style).

We want to say a huge thank-you to each of our generous charter guests who have supported the Environmental Awareness Group Sea Turtle project here in Antigua & Barbuda with their many donations. Since 2008, many of our guests have been donating US$20 to this wonderful project that is headed up by the very talented Mykl Clovis. The funds were used to pay for the many beach patrols and the volunteers who tirelessly monitor the beaches for signs of turtle nesting and hatching.
For this coming charter season of 2013/2014, we have selected a different and equally worthwhile charity to support:
A.B.S.A.R Search & Rescue.
Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue (ABSAR) is a voluntary organization dedicated to saving lives. It is an officially recognized search and rescue service providing 24-hour coverage 365 days of the year here in Antigua and Barbuda. They work in close co-operation with the Coast Guard, fire and ambulance services.
Their volunteers hail from a variety of backgrounds, and all undergo training in seamanship, small boat handling skills, search and rescue techniques and first aid. Each of them give up their own valuable time to train and answer distress calls. You may well have seen the A.B.S.A.R. rib out monitoring events such as Antigua Sailing Week and Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.
The ABSAR Medic Station is located at the AYCM Resort in Falmouth Harbour.
ABSAR is a Registered Non profit Charity, and relies on all of our donations for their existence. We are delighted to select A.B.S.A.R. for the new season’s donations and wish to thank all of our charter guests for your continued generosity and support.
For more information about this vital charity, please contact Jackie Ashford at firstname.lastname@example.org

We get quite a few requests for female charter skippers here in Antigua. This falls broadly into two areas of reasoning: some of our female guests who are on a girl’s sailing trip would rather sail with a female Captain and many girls want to be taught by a female Instructor. We are fortunate here in Antigua that we are able to recommend Heidi to our guests. Heidi has the ability to put everyone at their ease; no matter male or female and no matter what language you happen to speak.
Heidi is a very talented sailor. Firstly she is a commercially endorsed Ocean Yachtmaster and Cruising Instructor. She is also an ASA (American Sailing Association) Instructor up to ASA 105 level (Heidi can get you to Bareboat certification). Couple this with Heidi’s transatlantic deliveries and her ability to cook up a coconut battered jumbo shrimp in the galley for ten guests, and you have the perfect sea-going companion.
The evenings will always be entertaining with Captain Heidi; as well as knowing the best spots to enjoy the Antigua experience, she can share with you tales of her adventurous side (as if a transatlantic sailing trip isn’t adventurous enough!) when she hiked up to the base camp of Everest, or spent three weeks on cargo boats on the Amazon river (stowaway?).
Above it all though, Heidi will look after you, your friends (male and female) and your boat. Are you ready for an Antigua Heidi experience? Email us email@example.com and we’ll check availability for you.

Horizon Yacht Charters in Antigua welcomes Alexandra Dreams; a new Hanse 430 monohull. This stylish yacht will arrive in time for our new season charters commencing January 15 2013. She will be based in Jolly Harbour Marina on the west coast of Antigua.
This yacht sleeps up to 8 guests in 3 double cabins and 2 single berths. This, combined with two bathrooms, offers excellent accommodation for groups of sailing friends and family, or if you prefer a crewed option, why not take a skipper and cook and let the crew take all the responsiblity. You just sit back, and enjoy the Caribbean!
She has a fully battened mainsail which we know is popular with many of our repeat guests.
Be one of the first to book our Hanse 430 by emailing our Horizon Antigua base directly: firstname.lastname@example.org, or you can call toll free +1 866 439 1089. Telephone: +1 (268) 562 4725.

The highly anticipated Vision Series from Bavaria has finally hit the US shores and will proudly be on display at this year’s Annapolis Sail Boat Show, taking place later this week (October 4-8).
The latest from Farr for Bavaria is the new design for the Vision Series. The Vision 46, is an owners layout with 2 double cabins and 2 heads and showers. Other layouts are available. An asymmetric cockpit layout allows the port side to be a generous sun lounger at anchor, and in keeping with what you would expect from Farr, and what we have witnessed already in the Cruiser range, the new Vision 46 promises to be a capable shorthanded passage maker with a good turn of speed and close winded. For the full spec, please click here.
Recently nominated by SAIL magazine in their prestigious annual ‘Best Boat’s competition, The Vision 46 is a worthy contender and a hot favourite to take home the coveted prize.
Already available to charter for day sails, weekends or week long charters on the Chesapeake, we are also taking bookings for the Vision 46 from our BVI base. Available from November 1, 2012, early charter bookings are looking strong and we anticipate a busy season ahead. Check out our rates here for further information and to book!
And if you are attending the Annapolis Boat Show and would like to book an appointment to meet with our Sales Team, to discuss purchasing a yacht for either private use or to put into our charter fleet, please email email@example.com and we will ensure to schedule in some time for you.
