Oysters in Grenada

The 2011 Oyster Regatta was a huge hit last week, with some great races and fun evenings to reward the hard-working crews. Some unfortunate weather affected the Parade of Sails the first morning, but the clouds soon cleared and the day’s racing was made more interesting with frequent wind shifts.

The evening was spent back at Port Louis Marina, at a cocktail party sponsored by MAYAG, the Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada. The party continued at the fabulous La Luna resort, where the teams enjoyed a four-course dinner, entertainment and some enthusiastic dancing!

The second day the races started from Port Louis and ended at picturesque Calivigny Bay, with strong winds and a few exciting close calls! At La Phare Blue Resort they enjoyed a steel band playing on a tugboat as it sailed around the bay, while they gathered on board the lightship Västra Banken as an unusual venue for a cocktail party. Dinner at La Phare Blue’s welcoming and relaxed restaurant was of traditional Southern Caribbean and West Indian dishes, and live music by the Doc Adams Blues Band rounded out the entertainment for the evening.

The third day of races was the Dolphin Race Day, which started with challenging winds and a tricky passage race on the way back to Port Louis – keen attention was paid navigating the Porpoise rocks on the southwest tip of the Island. As a reward for an exciting day on the water, the crews were treated to a relaxing evening at The Aquarium, with a barbeque and stunning views from the beachside restaurant.

The final day of racing welcomed the teams with sunshine and clear skies, with a warm breeze and ended with the closing ceremony and gala gourmet dinner for over 230 guests at the new 1782 Restaurant at Port Louis Marina. Grenada was voted to be a firm favourite by the organizers and by the Oyster yacht teams and owners – who frequently said that the friendliness of the people and the stunning views added to the wonderful race venue.
