Learn to Sail in the Glorious Leeward Islands

What a wonderful place to learn to sail, or to brush up on existing skills – Antigua and the Leeward Islands. Consistent trade winds, turquoise water and professional, friendly instructors – what more could you ask for? Whether you're looking to learn new skills, enhance your existing skills or gain a qualification, we have something to suit everyone.

We offer the following sailing instruction courses:

American Sailing Association (ASA)
At Horizon Antigua, from our base in Jolly Harbour Marina, we offer the ASA Keelboat certification program.

Learn To Sail InstructorThe ASA program has structured levels of sailing standards, which are examined at progressive certification levels. Students receive a Logbook that lists the standards, certification and records sailing experience. All courses and examinations are run by ASA qualified instructors. When a certification level is successfully completed, your logbook is signed and stamped so that any charter or rental fleet operator can see your level of competency.

Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard (#101)
Prerequisites: None

Sailors must sail a boat of about 20 feet or more in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. A preparatory Standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required. Successful candidates earn a National Safe Boating Certificate approved by NASBLA and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Basic Coastal Cruising Standard (#103)
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification

Sailors must cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Bareboat Chartering Standard (#104) - (Intermediate Coastal Cruising)
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

An advanced cruising Standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30 – 50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. The Standard includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Coastal Navigation Theory (#105)
Prerequisites: None
Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

If you have little or no experience, then we recommend that you start off with Course #s 101 and 103. If you are on a week's charter, these two courses are easily taught in 5 days, giving you a couple of days to practice your newfound skills at the end of the week or simply relax!

Those that have cruising experience and basic seamanship skills should also add Course #104 to their instruction. The three courses can be taught in one week, but don't forget you are on vacation too so you may want to extend a few days to fit in some R&R! Anytime is perfect to sail in our islands, but from July 10 to October 31st we offer 10 days for the price of seven on our yachts, so you can add three free days at no extra charge on the weekly rate!

Enjoy the Freedom of Private Tuition
If you would prefer to rent your own bareboat and learn to sail under private instruction, choose the yacht you would like to rent and we will be happy to give you a price on the bareboat fee. Add the ASA Instructor's fee of $165 per day (not including food or gratuity), US$79 per person for ASA 101 course and between $60 to $80 per person for the ASA Course Materials, depending on the courses taken. This fee does not include food or beverages.

Coastal Passage Making Certification: Coastal Passage Making
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising, Coastal Navigation

This course is a 5 day course, starting on Monday and finishing on Saturday. Saturday evening is spent ashore.

American Sailing Association LogoCPM challenges those students who have taken Basic Keelboat, Bareboat Cruising, CoNav or have the equivalent qualifications. Some of these skills include night time approaches to anchorages, night time man overboards, full on navigation, lights at night, standing watches, proper customs and immigration procedures, and all of the safety items one must know when sailing out of sight of land. A TYPICAL DAY WHILE LEARNING TO SAIL

Day 1

Antigua ViewAfter provisioning and boat checks, we'll depart Jolly Harbour in the afternoon and sail through the evening with a night approach into Iles des Saintes. A 75 mile trip usually close hauled or close reaching to windward of Montserrat and along the leeward coast of Guadeloupe.

Day 2

iles desantesAfter we clear the boat, spend this lay day touring Terre-de-Haut, one of the main islands of the Iles des Saintes, either by foot, bike or scooter. Experience the tranquil beaches of Souffleur or Baie Mahault, explore the ruins of Fort Napoléon, left over from those 17th-century wars, including the naval encounter known in European history books as "The Battle of the Saints." You can see the barracks and prison cells, as well as the drawbridge and art museum. For those interested in the underwater world of les Saintes, dive the challenging depths and multicolored reefs of les Saintes or explore the intriguing underwater grottoes found near Fort Napoléon.

Day 3

Barbuda beachWe'll reach down on our 20.66 mile (approx. 5 hour) sail to the soaring peaks of Dominica and anchor in Prince Rupert Bay.

The is a good sail for honing our navigation skills from dead reckoning to shooting fixes to plotting our positions.

Day 4

Dominica WaterfallExplore the lush island of Dominica, its clear rivers, waterfalls, hot springs, and boiling lakes. Tour the famous "boiling point", hike the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a primordial rainforest where you'll see the mists rise gently over lush, dark-green growth, drifting up to blue-green peaks. Deep in the park is the Emerald Pool Trail, a 1/2-mile circuit loop that passes through the forest to a pool with a beautiful waterfall; or hire a guide to take you on a short walk to the Trafalgar Falls and down the pathway into the falls to the base where you'll find a trio of falls converging into a rock-strewn pool. For snorkelers and windsurfers the ideal spot is Picard Beach.

Day 5

Jolly HarborSet sail at first light back to Antigua with a night approach into Jolly Harbour, reversing day one of our course. This trip is a longer distance, but usually we're broad reaching which gives us good open water down wind practice.
