Typical 10 or 14 day Antigua to Domenica Itinerary
Antigua

Antigua – Iles des Saintes – Dominica
One way itinerary or two way; you choose! 10 day or 14 days

Horizon Antigua is delighted to launch a new itinerary for their guests.  This trip is likely to appeal to a broad group of sailors and non-sailors alike.  Here are just a few highlights of the trip, and an idea of the nautical miles.  We are offering this trip as a one way trip from Antigua to Dominica but equally it can be a two way trip as there are certainly enough highlights to keep you entertained.

Distance – nautical miles

  • Jolly Harbour, Antigua to Deep Bay, Antigua – 6 nm
  • Deep Bay, Antigua to English Harbour, Antigua – 16 nm
  • English Harbour, Antigua to Deshaies, Guadeloupe – 43nm
  • Deshaies, Guadeloupe to Iles des Saintes – 33 nm
  • Iles des Saintes to Portsmouth, Dominica – 21nm

Antigua
You’ll take a taxi from the airport and 25 minutes later you’ll be in the heart of Jolly Harbour amidst bars, restaurants, one of the largest supermarkets in the Caribbean and arts and craft shops.  Following a one to one boat and chart briefing your first sail will be to Deep Bay to the north. Dive on the wreck of The Andes Merchant Ship which sank back in 1908; you can just about make out the top of the masts out of the water – the ideal perch for a curious seagull.

Antigua

The next stop is picturesque Carlisle Bay.  Grab your snorkel kit and jump into the clear blue waters.

No trip to Antigua should miss out a tour of historic Nelson's Dockyard in famous English Harbour.  This is a fully restored working Dockyard complete with hard-working sail-makers, restaurants converted out of the original buildings in Nelson’s day and an interesting museum to brush up on your history.

Equally famous, but for lots of different reasons, is the “Jump up” at Shirley Heights steel band party each Sunday sunset.  Taxi or hike up to the ruins from Nelson’s Day and enjoy a welcome rum punch, BBQ jerk chicken, 20-piece steel band and live music – dance ‘til you drop.

Your next sail will be to clear in to Deshaises in Guadeloupe, followed by a sail down to the delightful islands of Iles des Saintes.

Iles des Saintes
If you like your islands just a short sail away and within line of sight, then you will enjoy sailing Iles des Saintes and exploring the mountainous scenery.  A perfect way to explore Terre de Haut is by scooter.  Explore the interesting town of Le Bourg and spend some time in the Fort Napoleon Museum.  If you enjoy French food, wine and cheese, you will be in gourmet heaven!

Your next island awaits!

Dominica

Dominica
So much has been written about Dominica that it’s difficult to summarise the delights of visiting this island.  It is so unspoilt that it is like stepping back to Columbus time.  It’s an island of outstanding natural beauty.  Here are just a few activities to tempt you (other than fantastic sailing, of course!).

Visit the Cabrits National Park/Fort Shirley and wander around the old British Fort and headland park.

Hike and swim in the Chaudiere Pool and swim up the Titou Gorge.  Enjoy the Forest Canopy with the Rain Forest Aerial Tram.

Take a robust hike to the Boiling Lake and the Valley of Desolation.  If you have enough energy you can also hike to the Trafalgar Falls.

If that’s enough exercise, when why not dive or snorkel in the delightful Soufriere Bay – what a perfect way to cool off.

A one way flight from Dominica to Antigua takes around 40 minutes on Liat Airline and costs from US$76 - US$96 per person (excluding taxes).  There are around 4 flights per day.

The one way fee is US$795.

Sail back 200 years and follow in the footprints of Admiral Horatio Nelson

Five Islands, AntiguaThinking about your next sailing adventure?  Why not combine the islands of Antigua and Nevis and follow in the historic footprints of Admiral Horatio Nelson. There's never been a better time to do this as 2005 marks the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. We've combined history with nature to offer this wonderful 7-night itinerary.  Take a longer trip and include the island of St Kitts in your itinerary.

Day 1: Arrive Jolly Harbour, Antigua. Enjoy a detailed, one-to-one briefing with the team and enjoy a dinner ashore at Melini's Italian restaurant on the water-front.

Plantation House NevisDay 2: Set sail for English Harbour - enjoy a tour of Nelson's Dockyard. Developed as a base for the British Navy in the great age of sail, the harbour served as the headquarters of the fleet of the Leeward Islands during the late 18th century. Today Nelson's Dockyard has been completely restored, and it is now the only Georgian dockyard in the world. Next, take a walk up to Shirley Heights or a taxi. Experience the partially-restored fortifications of the harbour's colonial observation post; the view from Shirley Heights extends out over the harbour and far across the Caribbean to Montserrat and Guadeloupe. Lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area. Take time to clear out of English Harbour.

NelsonDay 3: Take an early start for your downwind sail across to Nevis. Just 45 nautical miles, try your hand at fishing along the way. Pinney's Beach, NevisDay 4: One of our friendly taxi drivers/guides will pick you up from the beach and take you on a fascinating day tour. Stop at Montpelier Plantation Inn and stand under the tree where Nelson married his Nevisian lady Fanny Nisbet.  Take hiking shoes and long trousers and experience the trails through the rain forest, starting at Golden Rock Plantation, up to the top of Nevis Peak. Keep an eye out for the wild monkeys - they're shy! Enjoy a fine lunch and a dip in the pool before your return trip back to your yacht.

Day 5: Enjoy a lazy start as you sail north to Oualie Beach and swim and snorkel. Enjoy lunch on the beach, overlooking the island of St Kitts.  Set sail back to Charlestown for clearing out.
